(Read More...)]]> Project H.O.P.E. was awarded $4.7 million for Capital Development from Health and Human Services to construct a new facility in the Camden Lanning Square Community. Earlier today, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced over $18 million in grants awarded to community health centers in New Jersey due to the new health care law – the Affordable Care Act.   The award is a part of a series of capital investments that are made available to community health centers through the Affordable Care Act, which provides $9.5 billion to expand services over five years and $1.5 billion to support major construction and renovation projects at community health centers.

Project H.O.P.E. was awarded the $4.7 million to construct a new community health center in Camden, having outgrown the current facility because of a high demand for services. By creating a new site for Project H.O.P.E.’s primary and preventative care services, there will be an increase of access to care, as well as construction jobs and other employment opportunities brought to the Camden area. Overall, since the beginning of 2009, employment at community health centers nationwide has increased by 15 percent.  And, primarily due to the Affordable Care Act and the Recovery Act, community health centers are serving nearly 3 million additional patients today and will serve an additional 1.3 million additional new patients in the next two years.

(Read More...)]]> December 21st marks the National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, a chance to reflect on those who lost their lives while homeless in the past year. It’s also a moment where we can all remember the hardships that the homeless face, and the uphill battle they face regaining housing and self-sufficiency.

Running from 3pm to 4:30, this is a great opportunity to bring together friends, family, community members, and loved ones to remember those who faced homelessness over the year in 2011, and a moment of silence for those who passed away.

(Read More...)]]> Once again, Project H.O.P.E. has been chosen to speak at the National Healthcare for the Homeless Conference and Policy Symposium , being hosted in May15th through May 18th in Kansas City.  Licensed Clinical Social Worker Brian Colangelo has been asked to present on “Integration of Behavioral Health and Primary Care.” The discussion will focus on our work to integrate treatment plans for behavioral and primary care within the homeless population. It will be an opportunity for Brian to present to a national audience on what Project H.O.P.E. is doing in Camden and set groundwork for other community health centers to use.

(Read More...)]]> Today the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) put into place the new definition of homelessness. According to HUD, “This final rule, published in the Federal Register… integrates the regulation for the definition of “homeless,” and the corresponding recordkeeping requirementsfor the Emergency Solutions Grants program, the Shelter Plus Care program, and the Supportive Housing Program.” The full press release, including the details on the definition of homelessness, can be found here.

Some of the highlights on the new definition are:

  1. An individual or family who lacks a regular, fixed, stable nighttime residence including
    1. A place not meant for human habitation
    2. Publicly or privately supervised shelter or temporary living arrangement including emergency shelter, transitional housing, hotel or motel paid for by an agency
    3. Persons in institutions for 90 days or less provided they were homeless prior to entry
  2. An individual or family at imminent risk of losing housing
    1. Will lose residence within 14 days – including owned or rented units, hotel/motel paid for with household funds, staying with family or friends
    2. No subsequent residence has been identified
    3. Lacks resources or networks (friends, family, faith-based) to obtain other housing
  1. Unaccompanied youth 25 or younger and families who don’t qualify under the HUD definition but
  1. Individual or family
    1. Fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or other dangerous or life-threatening condition related to violence that has taken place at residence or makes household fearful of returning to residence
    2. Has no other residence
As a recipient of funding from HUD, Project H.O.P.E. works to make sure all individuals who meet this definition are able to get access to the medical care they need, and that is so critical to maintaining self sufficiency.

The pain and problems associated with AIDS continue to this day, and we want to be sure that all community members and patients have access to the information they need regarding this important topic.

To participate in raising awareness on World AIDS Day, we are participating in a Health Fair on December 1st, from 10:am—3;pm hosted by Puerto Rican United for Progress, located at 818 South Broadway Camden, NJ.  Please refer to our flyer below for more details on the event. (Read More...)]]> On Thursday, September 8th, Project H.O.P.E. will be hosting its first annual Night with the Camden Riversharks! Held at Campbell’s Field, we welcome friends, family, and neighbors and members of the community to join Project H.O.P.E. staff and board members for a baseball game with the Camden Riversharks.

Tickets are only $12, and Project H.O.P.E. will receive proceeds for every ticket we sell. In addition, a percentage of all food sales will be donated to our organization. This family-friendly venue is an excellent opportunity to join with friends and family for a fun night of baseball, all while helping Project H.O.P.E. in its mission to provide healthcare to the homeless.

On Wednesday, August 10th, the Board of Directors held their annual open house board meeting; a chance for community leaders, patients, family, and friends to interact with the board and staff of Project H.O.P.E. to learn about the work being done, services provided, and the shared vision for improving access to healthcare for the homeless. In attendance to the meeting were service providers from other Camden agencies, staff from Senator Robert Menendez’s office. Moreover,  State Senator Donald Norcross and Assemblyman Whip Wilson came to deliver remarks!

(Read More...)]]> Every year, Project H.O.P.E. opens its doors to the community for an excellent opportunity to have board members, staff, patients, community leaders, friends, and family all come together to discuss the excellent work being done by Project H.O.P.E. to increase access to high-quality, cost-efficient primary care for the homeless population of Camden County.

The 2011 Open-House has been announced for Wednesday, August 10th, running from 4-7pm, at our clinic on 439 Clinton Street, Camden, NJ 08103.

The event will include presentations and demonstrations from our medical staff, a chance to meet with the Board of Directors, talk with community leaders about the impact Project H.O.P.E. has, and hear from those who have directly been helped through Project H.O.P.E. (Read More...)]]> On Thursday, The Department for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the release of new housing vouchers in a joint effort with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said, “Working with our partners at HUD and in Congress, we continue to make good progress to reduce veteran homelessness though much work remains. VA is committed to providing veterans and their families with access to affordable housing and medical services that will help them get back on their feet.”

Covering the breakdown of the vouchers, Monarch Housing CEO Richard Brown explains at their website that Camden City can anticipate to receive 25 directly through the Camden Housing Authority and that an additional 100 will go to New Jersey through the Department of Community Affairs.

Richard Brown also  reinforced that Monarch Housing as well as advocates on the national and local level established a goal of 60,000 new vouchers to meet the needs of chronically homeless veterans.

Project H.O.P.E. aims to reinforce these goals of aiding the chronically homeless by providing high-quality, cost-efficient healthcare to the homeless and those in-transition to housing.
